Two films inspired by Gabriel and François Legaffe

Every Friday morning on the show I host at QUB Radio, I have fun with Joseph Facal, who, like me, is a die-hard movie buff, and find movies that stick with the news.

Works by little-known authors, but also big hits.

Two films come to mind this week when I think of the gaffes by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois and François Legault.

Frozen in 1967

In the case of GND, that would be Austin Powers, a 1997 spoof of James Bond filmed with Mike Myers.

Especially the hilarious scene where the evil Dr. Evil (frozen in 1967 and resurrected 30 years later) tells his accomplices that he has an evil plan.

Steal a nuclear missile and threaten to destroy the world if we don’t give it to him right away… ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

The members of his gang stare at him in disbelief…

“Um, do you mind raising the ransom price a bit?” One of them told him. A million dollars is nothing today. There are companies that make billions in sales! »

for dr Evil, living like we’re still in the late 1960’s, a million dollars is an immense, astronomical, unimaginable sum. But 1997, well, that’s good, but still…

I immediately thought of this film when I heard GND say that Québec Solidaire would tax the “ultra rich”.

According to QS, what is an ultra empire?

A citizen who has assets in the order of…ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!! (Add echo for more drama.)

For QS, this number is gigantic! Colossal!

But as my Treasury colleague Daniel Germain pointed out very well on Wednesday and Mario Dumont yesterday, if after 20 years you’ve paid off in full your home that’s now worth $420,000, you’ve diligently contributed to RRSPs, and you have life insurance and a good pension fund, well chances are you have, yes, a MILLION DOLLAR fortune!

They are not “ultra rich”. Just a responsible worker who took care of his finances.

But for QS you are the equivalent of Bill Gates.

Proof that these people are still alive in 1967.

For François Legault is the film that comes to mind The wages of fearwhich Henri-Georges Clouzot shot in 1953.

Yves Montand plays a guy who has to drive a truck full of nitroglycerin through the jungle. He has to be super careful because at the slightest jerk he jumps!

This is Legault talking about immigration.

If you venture onto this super slippery terrain, you have to do like Montand and drive at 1 cm/h.

However, our PM got into his truck and hit the gas pedal.

Result: He had only spoken KABOUM for 15 seconds!

Fortunately, the news these days is fruitful.

GND’s slip was halted by Legault’s blunder, halted by the Queen’s death.

Saved by the bell!
