Montreal-based company ergonofis’ Sway 2.0 is an adjustable, motorized desk that reminds you to get up at regular intervals. It’s impeccably designed but expensive and doesn’t offer the connectivity of some of its competitors.

Before we get into techno, let’s talk about the environment and design. Headquartered on Rue Louvain in Montreal, ergonofis received B Corp certification last July for its commitment to the environment, specifically for the design of sustainable products and its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. For her Sway adjustable desk, she opted for simplicity and natural colors. The one and a half inch thick solid Canadian wood table is available in maple, cherry or walnut. A device allows the cables to be grouped and hidden.
The Sway 2.0 looks great, it’s rock solid, it’s a proven quality piece of furniture that will add a touch of chic to any office space. It is available in three preset sizes from 48 to 72 inches wide and can also be custom cut with a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks. We completed the assembly of the 21 parts in almost two hours.
When you tap on the touchscreen surface, which is 5 inches high and 1 inch wide, in the lower-right corner of the desk, a tiny screen appears at the top that shows the height. A line in the middle with two up and down arrows allows us to raise or lower the desk. A single button labeled Menu displays advanced settings. Here you choose the interface language, metric or imperial units and configure the upper and lower limits of the desktop.
After that, all you have to do is move your finger up or down the line for the Sway to adjust to the desired height. You can also hold your finger on one of the arrows to set it manually. Its height can increase from 22.7 to 48.7 inches thanks to its two motors that can support up to 300 pounds. Operation is quiet, less than 45 decibels. In our setting, we went from the lower limit to the upper limit in 8 seconds. Up to four different users can program their two preferred heights.
If an obstacle prevents the table from moving, a sensor automatically stops the motors. Do you sometimes forget to set up your desk just to stretch your legs? We have programmed three intervals that remind you to get up at 5, 10 or 15 minutes per hour. A bell icon simply flashes, prompting the user to raise and then lower the desktop.
Finally, as a last clever little thing, you can lock and unlock the height controls again with the menu button to prevent kids from playing with the desk.
The Sway 2.0 comes with a 10-year warranty on steel components and five years on electrical components. Ergonofis also allows returning the desktop after a 30-day trial period for a $95 processing fee.
We love less
Without being incredibly complex, assembling the Sway is challenging, with 28 screws – which thankfully go into pre-drilled holes – and a few not-so-obvious steps. Irritating detail, the manual refers to an unavailable video with a QR code.
The Sway has no connectivity, WiFi or Bluetooth, which would allow for more intuitive configurations from a smartphone or an activity report, for example. The user interface designed by ergonofis does its job well, but it takes a while to get used to it.
At a starting price of $1795, this is a sizeable expense.
We’re not going to insist here that an office worker has to get up for a few minutes every hour, that’s a consensus. The Sway is a valuable ally for this, much more practical than manual supports.
Buyers who are disappointed with adjustable desks generally have two complaints: noisy and sluggish motorized mechanisms, and a work surface that’s easily damaged. Without obviously having tested the Sway for a long time, one has to admit that ergonofis has not skimped on the quality of materials and components. A beautiful desk, solid, silent and carefully designed, at a respectable price but average in this category. Without a doubt a recommendable purchase if you are ready for the investment.
