Frozen Delights… and Flavors!
To create his flavor blends, master ice cream maker Mario Gauthier trained in the art of gelato on the University of North Carolina campus gelato carpiciani, is inspired by the science of aromatic molecules developed by François Chartier. He creates mixtures that are as surprising as they are delicious, such as avocado-basil or lychee-coconut-raspberry, all made from fresh ingredients and homemade preparations such as salted caramel or vegan brownies. Well known to residents of Old Lachine, he opened the first Quai des Glaces store there in 2015 and has just inaugurated a counter at the CF Marché des Promenades in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville. On site or online you can order its quality products, all delicious, from full fruit sorbet to gelato, with several vegan options. Our favourite: the irresistible Iced Keys Lime Pie!

Pista Iced Coffee
We’re starting to be spoiled for choice when it comes to canned iced coffee. We particularly like the one from Pista thanks to its balance. It has no unpleasant bitterness, just enough acidity and a slightly fruity taste. We’d even say it’s refreshing… with coffee! As it tends towards citrus, its aromatic profile would be well “cut” with lemonade to be even more refreshing. Many cocktails can even be prepared with a few milliliters of frozen pista, as we were shown bartender who were experimenting with the product when it launched in June. A caffeinated Negroni? Why not ! A 250ml can contains no less than 150mg of caffeine, which is slightly more than the equivalent of a “regular” filter. So enjoy in moderation!

In 2015, Smoke Show launched its first product in Montreal, Hot Jalapeño Sauce. An idea of brothers Dave and Nick Rose, created from peppers in a smokehouse. This sauce quickly became a big hit. Since then, the range has expanded to a dozen products, including condiments, all made here from mostly locally sourced ingredients and cooked in small batches for maximum freshness. Our favorite is undoubtedly the jalapeño aioli, a delicious savory sauce with a slightly smoky flavor that can spice up a burger, serve as a dip, or replace mayonnaise in a salad.

Spice blends don’t change the world, except… Montreal-based company Kanel could revolutionize your meals, nothing less. From the moment we opened the five blends that make up the Endless Summer Box, we were mesmerized by the products’ powerful gourmet flavors. We wanted to try them all right away. While the Butcher’s Block and Organic Louisiana Fried Chicken are more classic mixes, the Caramelized Coffee Rub surprises with its subtle taste of a dark drink that soaks up grilled meat. Also of particular note is freshly salted pepper, surprising peppercorns eaten whole to add a touch of spice to dishes. In fact, it would be a mistake to limit the use of these high-quality “perfect for grilling” seasonings to grilled meats. These also go very well with vegetables, tofu or salads. At a large family gathering at the chalet, one guest who was enthusiastic about the products even went so far as to sprinkle the mixtures on slices of watermelon. Judgment of all guests? A real treat!
Price: $59 for the Endless Summer box set, available online and at select outlets
