The accident caused “serious brain injuries,” according to a press release on Thursday from a representative of the 53-year-old actress, which was quoted by several media outlets.
“It has long been her decision to donate her organs and she is being kept alive to determine if any are viable,” the text reads.
The statement also thanked Ms. Heche’s supporters as well as the medical staff who cared for her at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital north of Los Angeles.
“Anne had a big heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit,” the statement continued.
“More than her extraordinary talent, she considered spreading kindness and joy her life’s work,” the text continues, adding that “she will be remembered for her courageous honesty.”
The actress has been in a coma since her accident on Aug. 5, when her car crashed into a two-story home in the Mar Vista neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department, “causing structural damage and a serious fire.”
According to the same source, it took 59 firefighters 65 minutes to extinguish the fire.
Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Thursday that they will conduct blood tests on Ms. Heche and that investigators would “take the matter to the appropriate legal authority.” However, the police did not provide any information on possible legal consequences.
Local media reported the same day that preliminary tests had come back positive for the narcotic. However, other tests must be performed to ensure that the positive result is not related to any medical treatment.
According to celebrity reporting TMZ, which cites unnamed law enforcement sources, Ms Heche tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl, a highly potent and addictive synthetic opiate used in some treatments.
Anne Heche acted in numerous films in the 1990s, including “Six Days, Seven Nights” and “Donnie Brasco”. She is also known for her role on the soap opera Another World, which earned her a Daytime Emmy Award in 1991.
In the 1990s, she had a high-profile relationship with presenter Ellen DeGeneres.
