The iconic French comedy character, François Pignon, was a role apparently destined for Laurent Paquin. “French actor Jacques Villeret was brilliant in the film based on the play,” explains the comedian. I’m a big fan of French comedy and for me Le Diner de Cons is a masterpiece, just like the best plays by Molière or Feydeau. Everything is here!”

However, Laurent Paquin almost never played it. “André Robitaille and I have wanted to do a show together for years, but it was never possible, mainly due to deadlines. When he offered me the idiots’ dinner, I was super happy because I was finally available. Everything worked, even if we didn’t know yet that we would have to postpone the project by two years due to a global pandemic. Even after these postponements, the originally planned cast was able to make themselves available and everyone was happy to work on the project.

Back to the theater

Although Laurent Paquin is a regular on the scene, especially solo, he still played little on the

Theater, except in L’emmerdeur almost 15 years ago, in Just for Laughs and in some musicals like Chicago or Demain matin, Montréal m’attend. “For me, The Cons Dinner is not a category; that’s what I will most importantly have played on stage. But I’m not a nervous person before I play, I never get nervous. I just have to have fun. Jacques Villeret and Thierry Lhermitte were perfect in the film, but you have to forget what was done before and play it how you see fit.

A gala in August

In addition to the performances of the play, Laurent Paquin works diligently on the gala ComediHa! which he will moderate on August 18th. “There is a lot to write and it takes a lot of time to prepare. Otherwise I write jokes, I quietly prepare a new show. Guillaume Pineault, Billy Tellier, Sylvain Larocque, Mona de Grenoble, Julie Ringuette, Pascal Morrissette and Fabien Olicard will be part of his gala presented at the Capitole Theater in Quebec.

The comedian is also developing a feature film project, but he’s proceeding at his own pace. “I’m working on a script and we’ll see what happens. This is an area I don’t master, so I know it can take years to master. I work with a friend, Jean-François Léger, who has more experience than me.”

News from his children

Laurent Paquin used our meeting to share news about his family. Her son has completed his third year of high school and has found a new passion. “Albert recently discovered boxing. With the pandemic, he sat in front of his computer playing video games for two years. I thought it was starting to get dangerous; He had to leave the house for a moment. I offered him boxing and in the end he’s very interested. I don’t think he’ll make it that far to fight in a ring but it gives him cardio. As for Lisa, she’s still in elementary school. She collects snails and rides a bicycle. Everything is beautiful for her.”
