Snake Island | Ukraine congratulates itself on driving the Russians out of a “strategic territory”.

(Kyiv) The Ukrainian army on Thursday congratulated itself for forcing the Russians, “unable to withstand the fire of our artillery,” to retreat from Snake Island, a “strategic” area in the Black Sea that has been under siege since the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“I thank the defenders of the Odessa region who did their utmost to liberate a strategically important area,” Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Valeriï Zaloujniï said in a telegram.

“Unable to withstand the fire of our artillery, our rockets and our airstrikes, the occupiers left Snake Island,” he said happily, accompanying his message with a video showing the attacks on the island.

“Our armed forces have done a great job,” Andriï Yermak, head of the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said on Twitter.

The Russian army announced its withdrawal from the island early Thursday, claiming it did so “as a show of goodwill” as it said the “targets set on the ground” had been “achieved”.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the gesture was intended to facilitate grain exports from Ukraine across the Black Sea.

For its part, the southern command of the Ukrainian army had stated that “the enemy (Russian) fled in two speedboats, leaving the island “on fire” where “explosions can still be heard”.

For the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Dmytro Kouleba, the Russians are trying “to minimize their defeat, as usual,” he responded on Twitter.

The foreign minister again called on Kiev’s western allies to “provide more heavy weapons” in order to “liberate more areas occupied by Moscow”.

The island of the small snakes, located in the north-west of the Black Sea opposite the mouth of the Danube, became a symbol from the first day of the Russian offensive, as a member of the small Ukrainian garrison defending it, the Russian ship, his Demanded surrender, demanded to “fuck out”.

The Russian military eventually took control of it.

The island then became a regular target of Ukrainian drone and rocket attacks.

Russia said on June 21 that it had repelled an attempt by Kiev forces to retake Snake Island.
