Memorial Cup: Presentation of the final between the Sea Dogs and the Bulldogs

SUMMARY: Bulldogs 2 – Sea Dogs 5 (3rd period)

The Saint John Sea Dogs take on the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Memorial Cup Grand Finals. The game is currently running on RDS.

Sea Dogs defenseman Vincent Sévigny gave the Sea Dogs an early lead. His shot from the blue line was deflected by Bulldogs-Canadian defender Arber Xhekaj.

Barely three minutes after the first goal, Cam McDonald fooled goalie Marco Costantini’s vigilance and doubled the QMJHL representatives’ lead. It was a first point of the tournament for McDonald and a second assist for William Villeneuve in play.

Mason McTavish has proven many times that he can take his game to the next level in important games. The Bulldogs’ No. 23 stopped the Sea Dogs’ momentum with a quick reply. The Ducks prospect conceded his fifth goal of the competition.

Cam McDonald returned to attack in the second half. When the Sea Dogs counterattacked, he fought his way to the net and was able to completely slow down Costantino. His teammate Riley Bezeau took the opportunity to unleash a quick and accurate wrist shot that defeated the Bulldogs goaltender.

Seconds later, William Dufour took a beautiful pass from Ryan Francis to score his seventh goal of the competition. The winner of this season’s Most Valuable Player in the QMJHL is now one goal away from the record for most goals scored in a Memorial Cup. A shared record by Dale Hawerchuk, Luc Robitaille and Pat Falloon.

After a disorganized power play by the Ontario side, without a shot on target, Hamilton used a lucky jump to reduce the deficit to two goals. With less than ten seconds remaining in the second period, fellow Habs pro Jan Mysak saw the puck hit his right pad before landing in the back of the net. This very important goal allowed the Bulldogs to stay in the game and continue to believe in their chance to win the prestigious Memorial Cup.

Notes before the game

Both teams earned their place in the finals after both defeated the Shawinigan Cataractes. William Dufour of the New York Islanders propelled Saint John to victory with an outstanding four-goal effort. He is attempting to score in his fourth straight game since the competition began tonight.

In the preliminary round, the Sea Dogs defeated the OHL champion Bulldogs 5-3.

The Sea Dogs, who qualified to host the tournament, are looking to give the QMJHL a third straight Memorial Cup win following the triumphs of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in 2018 and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in 2019.
