Corey Pronman places Shane Wright fourth in the mock draft

Just one week until the start of the NHL Entry Draft, which takes place July 7th and 8th at Bell Center. Remember the Canadian currently has 14 opportunities including the very first plus two others in the top-33.

Currently, the first choice appears to be a two-way race, with Shane Wright and Juraj Slafkovsky being the two candidates picked for the very first spot.

And today, Corey Pronman (the athlete) has published his mock draft, in which Slafkovsky comes first overall. What is surprising about his exercise, however, is seeing Wright pointing to the fourth row.

In fact, Pronman says, if the CH Wright turns up his nose in the front row (which isn’t guaranteed, but is a real possibility), he may well and truly have to wait for the fourth pick before his name is called becomes (by the Kraken, which currently has the choice). In the case of Slafkovsky, on the other hand, it would be in Montreal or New Jersey.

In his exercise, Pronman therefore places Slafkovsky in first place, followed by David Jiricek (!), Logan Cooley and Wright. Cutter Gauthier (rather than Simon Nemec) completes the top five.

As for the other CH picks, Pronman ranks Liam Ohgren at No. 26 and says the Habs held him in high esteem for a while. Then, at No. 33, he sees Tristan Luneau drafted by Kent Hughes, but he notes that it’s not impossible to see the Quebecer drafted a few notches earlier, particularly by Tampa Bay (31st) or by Arizona ( 32.).

Again, given that CH is likely looking to move into the repechage, it’s difficult to say whether the Montreal organization will actually fish for 26th and 33rd, but since Pronman can’t invent transactions, he’s assuming the status quo .

Otherwise, as far as the QMJHL is concerned, Pronman sees Nathan Gaucher as the first Courteau circuit product to be drafted while placing him 13th with the Islanders. Then it’s Luneau in Montreal at No. 33, then Maveric Lamoureux in Ottawa at No. 39.

In short, we’ll see if Pronman is right in expecting Wright to fall behind in the standings. I hope that he is wrong and that the center of Frontenacs will be CH’s choice, but we will have the answer exactly in a week.

– The Canadiens reveal their preseason game schedule. Will we see a duel between the first two options (Wright vs. Slafkovsky?) on September 26th?

– We already know that some of them are innocent (including Mete and Cale Makar), but it’s true.

– Listen.

– Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin having fun in Russia.

– Impressive.
