New health routine on the horizon? Beer would be beneficial for men’s gut health. Provided that you drink it every night, and most importantly, without forgetting that alcohol should be consumed in moderation.
Gentlemen, our little finger tells us that this beginning of summer you will particularly appreciate this discovery. According to a Portuguese study published in June 2022, beer would improve men’s gut health.
A beer a night for a healthy gut
There’s an old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. what about beer “ A mousse with every dinner helps to have a healthy gut”? That roughly sums up a study conducted by researchers at the University of Lisbon, the results of which were published on June 15, 2022 in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.
For their work, the scientists consulted 22 men between the ages of 23 and 58, all of whom are in good health. For four weeks, a sample of participants drank a beer (33 cl) with dinner in the evening. At the beginning and end of the study period, the researchers took blood and stool samples. They found noticeable improvements in gut health in those who consumed the beer.
Beer stimulates healthy bacteria
This study allowed researchers to claim that beer stimulates healthy bacteria that fight disease and infection. This drink contains compounds such as polyphenols and other microorganisms that are produced during fermentation. They promote the diversity of the gut microbiota, which plays a key role in maintaining good health. In fact, maintaining a good gut balance reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart problems, cancer and dementia.
Polyphenols are plant compounds found in hops, barley and yeast. According to lead author, Ana Faria, “ Beer polyphenols could enter the gut where they can modulate bacterial growth. In addition, some beers may contain live fermentation microorganisms “.

No need for alcohol in the beer
Good news for those who don’t drink alcohol: Non-alcoholic beer seems to have the same benefits as alcoholic beer. In the study, the authors state that “ The effects of beer on gut microbiota modulation are independent of alcohol and may be mediated by beer polyphenols “.
While beer benefits gut health, it has other benefits as well. Various studies claim thatit would reduce the problems of diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as the risk of stroke (cerebral vascular accident) and Alzheimer’s disease. Due to the xanthohumol it contains Beer lowers the risk of developing prostate cancer. It would also be a pain reliever as effective as acetaminophen. All these findings take into account low beer consumption.
Of course, beer, especially if it contains alcohol, should be consumed in moderation.
