Xiaomi has recently entered the laptop market, but until now its computers have not been available in Europe. The Chinese manufacturer is changing course with a brand new 2-in-1 PC with a detachable 12.4-inch screen: the Xiaomi Book S. This tablet/PC is thus competing with Microsoft’s Surface Go and the current MateBook E Huawei or the future Dell XPS 2-in-1.
It can be easily transported thanks to its light weight, to which must be added the weight of the keyboard/cover, which easily connects with a magnetic connector (sold separately). The keyboard is pleasant to use and the finishes are correct, which must be underlined when we observe the quality of this type of detachable models of some competitors. On the connection side, the PC is limited to a USB-C port and a mini jack. That’s not much, but unfortunately common with this type of machine. Good news, there’s a 1080p webcam at the top of the screen to provide a good video conferencing experience. The screen offers WQHD+ resolution (2560 x 1600 pixels) in 16:10 format, which is impressive.
Snapdragon chip for long battery life
Xiaomi’s choice of processor is interesting, the manufacturer has a Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 in its sights. A Qualcomm SoC that we haven’t been able to test yet and that promises plenty of power for office automation. Poke around for a few minutes, no problem, but of course we’ll have to run full tests to find out more. Hopefully, however, Microsoft has made some strides in optimizing its Arm-compatible apps, as the results on the most recently equipped PCs have been disappointing. It remains to be seen whether the performance is there, as Qualcomm announced a few months ago. In any case, according to the manufacturer, this arm chip would allow up to 13 hours of autonomy, all together with a 65W charger for fast charging.
The Xiaomi Book S will retail for €700 with an introductory price of €600 for pre-orders. For the detachable keyboard, you have to add €150, a significant price that adds significantly to the final bill.
