Telegram just implemented a paid subscription in a premium plan with special features for heavy users. Don’t panic for others: the classic version of messaging remains free.
We finally know the benefits and price of Telegram Premium, the paid formula that instant messaging has just launched. A few days ago, in a long tweet, Pavel Durov, Telegram boss, stated that the company had to change its economic model to face the competition from other messaging services (WhatsApp, Messenger, Signal, etc.) and the growing needs of the majors to satisfy users of the application. Now it’s done.
But with the increasing number of users leading to an increase in operational costs (servers, bandwidth, etc.) and the need to constantly add new features to face the competition, Pavel Durov had to admit that the business of the app was model no longer tenable. The company has been exploring new monetization techniques for some time. In particular, it has experimented with placing ads in public channels, while ensuring that users’ privacy is respected – these ads do not affect private channels and do not track users. But the idea of making it the core of the application’s business model was eventually scrapped and a new solution was found: the paid subscription.
Telegram Premium: more features for 5.49 euros per month
In a lengthy message published on Telegram on June 10, Pavel Durov explained that many Telegram users demanded the lifting of restrictions on chats and sending pictures or videos. Unfortunately, it was not possible to accommodate this request free of charge, as it would result in a sharp increase in operational costs. Therefore, to meet these needs, the company has found a solution: the paid subscription called Telegram Premium. For Telegram’s director, it’s a way of giving Telegram monetization back to users, which adding ads to group conversations doesn’t do, since the people behind the ads have their own interests. .
On its blog, this Tuesday, June 21, Telegram revealed the full list of benefits of its new formula:
- No Ads.
- The files sent can now reach 4 GB and can be downloaded by all interlocutors.
- Faster download speed stored in the cloud.
- Doubling application limits (number of channels followed, saved GIFs, pinned discussions, public links, favorite stickers, etc.).
- Space to write your bio and caption the synced images with link insertion.
- Text transcription of voice messages.
- Stickers and special reactions.
- Premium app badge and icon.
- Animated profile pictures.
- New management of discussion channels and thematic files (archiving, cutting chats, etc.).
The premium subscription is available from today at a price of 5.49 euros per month in France. Don’t panic, however, implementing this formula does not mean that Telegram will become a paid service for all users. Telegram Premium is a “Pro” version of the application that gives access to more features. The idea, therefore, is to keep the application as it is – free – but at the same time respond to user needs by adding new paid options. Pavel Durov promised that “tAll existing features remain free, and more free features will be added later“. In this way, users who do not want to pay for a Telegram Premium account are not left out. The company has also added new features in its latest update, available to everyone for free: application for membership for public groups , verification badges in Exchanges, better bots, improved exchanges, auto-save to Android gallery, improved external sharing, creating animated profile pictures on Mac, and fixes and tweaks… In this way, Telegram implements a policy similar to TikTok, but keeps what makes its essence and its charm.
