COVID-19: booster vaccination campaign this summer in Gaspésie

It starts on August 15 for people aged 60 and over, as well as for people at risk to avoid the expected fall in case numbers.

Whether you’ve already received four, three or two doses, you’ll show up in August and this will be your booster dose for 2022. Hopefully you don’t have to give another one mid-year, but it could happensays the Regional Director of Public Health, Dr. Yv Bonnier-Viger, an.

according to dr Bonnier-Viger variant BA2-12.1, directly from the US, currently accounts for 25% of new COVID-19 cases here.

The Regional Director of Public Health also observes that new variants from Africa and Europe indicate an increase in the number of cases. These two variants could arrive here in September or at the end of August, so from August 15 we are preparing a real booster vaccination campaign for people over 60 years old, starting, of course, with the most vulnerable.

dr Bonnier-Viger believes that an annual booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine could eventually become the norm and that this vaccine will end up being considered similar to the flu vaccine.

The status of vaccination

For this summer, the state health director expects the number of cases to decrease, as in the summers of 2020 and 2021. According to physicians, this can already be observed in the number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations below.

Due to the time of year there are more people outside so it transmits less and we’re not too concerned about daylight savings time.says dr Bonnier-Viger.

The health official points out that vaccination against the virus has been slowing down in the region for some time.

Nevertheless, he is positive about the upcoming campaign in August.

In general, he says, we have higher vaccination rates among young people than in Quebec, but we’re slightly lower among the over-18s. It’s about a difference between 95% in the rest of Quebec and 94% here, so it’s not that big, and it’s clear that August’s campaign will see us catch up with all the beautiful people there!

Healthcare workers and people with certain health conditions are also targeted by this campaign.

In the meantime, vaccination for the first, second, third and fourth doses is still possible throughout the summer at various locations in the region. The dates of the clinics can be found on the website of the ZISS the Gaspe.

Except for sites open for no-appointment vaccinations, which ZISS reminds you that it is important not to come to the clinic without prior appointment.
