The opposing Trump lawyer faces 83 years in prison for customer fraud

US Attorney Michael Avenatti, who briefly posed as a sworn enemy of Donald Trump and defended porn actress Stormy Daniels, faces up to 83 years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to multiple customer fraud charges in California.

Mr. Avenatti, who represented Stormy Daniels in his complaint against Donald Trump while he was in the White House, is currently serving a sentence on embezzlement charges following a conviction against him in New York.

The 51-year-old lawyer was sentenced to two and a half years in prison last July for attempting to extort millions from the sporting goods supplier Nike.

In a California court on Thursday, he admitted to embezzling funds that should have been paid to four of his clients and obstructing the tax authorities’ investigation, the Justice Department said.

Michael Avenatti is fixed on the amount of his sentence on September 19th. He faces a maximum sentence of 83 years in prison for all the facts he admitted.

The attorney took the spotlight in 2018 when he defended Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had a brief fling with Donald Trump in 2006. Stephanie Clifford, as her real name is, had sued the American President for the cancellation of a confidentiality agreement that forbade him from speaking about this adventure.

Michael Avenatti then emerged as the Republican president’s left-back, multiplying his interventions in the press and on social media until he hinted that he could face Donald Trump in the race for the White House.

But in March 2019, it was the beginning of the end for the bald attorney, who was arrested on charges of attempted extortion against Nike and tax evasion.

He was found guilty in July 2021 and sentenced to 30 months in prison.

Mr Avenatti was also convicted in the Stormy Daniels case. Last February, Manhattan federal court found that he had deceived and defrauded the actress and her publisher by withholding $300,000 of a promised $800,000 advance on a book “Full Disclosure” about her affair with Donald Trump would have.

The money, half refunded to him by the lawyer, allowed Mr Avenatti to travel and lease a Ferrari.
