The notch of the MacBook could finally be used for something

An inspired Australian developer recently designed an app that will supercharge the new MacBooks and give them a very interesting new use.

If there is indeed a differentiating and recognizable design element that is increasingly being incorporated into Apple products, then it is this famous notch. Some absorb it broadly, while others hate it with virulence. But while the majority have already overlooked this design element, introduced by Apple in 2017 with the iPhone X, it continues to spark some debate about its real usefulness.

Especially since the announcement of the new MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inches and the new MacBook Air M2, which integrate it into their design to simply place a simple webcam there. And it is precisely this problem that the Australian developer Ian Keen tried to solve with a new addition to his manufactory.

A hub for faster AirDrop files

Through his Twitter account, this developer shared his new creation that is under development. This is an application that allows you to turn MacBook’s notch into a real file sharing window. For this, it has developed a light warning system that flashes the notch when the user moves files that can be shared via AirDrop.

Once selected, files can then be dragged and dropped onto the notch to automatically open an AirDrop window with files ready to send. An orange light signal is triggered when files are selected and turns green once the documents have reached the notch.

An application that offers significant time savings and “visual benefit” at the hack

This application is not yet available for MacBooks, but its inventor hopes to offer a restricted version via the TestFlight development tool in the coming days. First, he wants to make sure that he can run his application on other machines, but also on Mac models without a notch.

This shortcut seems very effective and should save you time compared to what Apple offers to access this feature. Currently, transferring a file via AirDrop requires an additional step where the user must first click the “Share” option before accessing the share window.

So this shortcut seems like a good way to improve the sharing experience on Mac. It might even be nicer if it only activates when the user moves the files near the notch to avoid unnecessary activations. In any case, this will at least have the merit of giving another use to this good old one notch.
