Summer, sun, heat, vacation and… mosquitoes! They come back with the good weather. Their bites are unpleasant, but they can also be dangerous. To protect yourself from this, there are natural solutions to keep these insects away.
What dangers do mosquitoes pose?
Only the females bite mosquitoes. They do this before the eggs are laid, which can hatch in as little as four days. “Mosquitoes grow faster when temperatures rise.”, states the health insurance company. Therefore, in hot countries, their development is easier, but these insects are a threat: they are vectors of diseases. When a female mosquito is infected with a virus, she can transmit it to humans through the bite. Chikungunya, Dengue Fever, Zika Virus Disease, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile Fever, Rift Valley Fever are some of the mosquito-borne viral diseases. However, it can also transmit parasitic diseases such as malaria. Depending on the species, the diseases it transmits are different. The tiger mosquito, for example, can transmit three viruses in particular: dengue fever, zika and chikungunya.
How can you protect yourself against this?
To avoid bites, there are repellent products that are applied to the body. It is also recommended to wear long and loose clothing or even put on mosquito nets. Mosquito control measures are initiated in some communities when cases of vector mosquito contamination are detected. It is possible for individuals to set traps, plug in gadgets, or even use special goons to kill them.
Some plants can naturally repel mosquitoes. Incorporating basil, lemon thyme, lemon balm, eucalyptus, or lemon verbena near the openings will act as a natural repellent against these insects. Diffusers are another solution to repel them: just add a mixture of lemongrass essential oil and geranium essential oil or eucalyptus essential oil.
Otherwise, there are various home remedies: A bowl of tea with a pressed clove of garlic or fresh oranges studded with cloves give off a smell that mosquitoes don’t like. In hot weather, the fan can do a double job: these insects don’t like moving air. Placing a fan near an open window, or multiple fans around you, should help repel these unwanted insects.
