Telegram Premium: soon a paid subscription

Telegram will offer a paid subscription in a premium plan that comes with special features. But don’t panic: the messaging application will always remain free in its standard version.

Telegram, the competing instant messenger of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal and many others, has always been free. Known for its high level of encryption – and therefore security in terms of user data confidentiality, although some experts have concerns – it sees an increasing number of downloads with every WhatsApp crash or crash, as well as controversies over security breaches or changes to the terms of service that limit its use modify personal data. The application, launched in 2013 and created by Russian developers, currently has more than 460 million weekly active users worldwide, with an increase in downloads since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

Telegram has always been free. But with the increase in the number of users leading to an increase in operational costs (servers, bandwidth, etc.) and the need to constantly add new features to stand up to the competition, the head of Telegram, the Russian Pavel Durov, admitted that the business model of the application is no longer tenable. Because of this, the company has been investigating new monetization techniques for some time. In particular, it has experimented with placing ads in public channels, while ensuring that users’ privacy is respected – these ads do not affect private channels and do not track users. But making it the core of the application’s business model was discarded and a new solution was found: the paid subscription.

Telegram Premium: a special formula for heavy users

In a lengthy message published on Telegram, Pavel Durov explains that many Telegram users are demanding the lifting of restrictions on chatting and sending pictures or videos. Unfortunately, it is not possible to answer this request free of charge, as this would lead to a sharp increase in operating costs. In order to meet these demands, the company has therefore found a solution: the paid subscription. It’s called Telegram Premium and it allows users to transfer larger files and have access to reactions and exclusive stickers. For Telegram’s director, it’s a way of giving Telegram monetization back to users, which adding ads to group conversations doesn’t do, since the people behind the ads have their own interests. .

Don’t panic, however, the announcement of this news does not mean that Telegram will be paid for all users. Telegram Premium will be a “Pro” version of the application that will allow access to more features. The idea would therefore be to keep the application as it is – free – but at the same time respond to user requests by adding new paid options. Pavel Durov promises that “tAll existing features remain free, and more free features will be added later“. This way, users who do not want to pay for a Telegram Premium account are not left out.

While the price of the subscription and its release date have not been officially communicated, data found in the beta version suggests that the subscription will be released until the end of June 2022 at a price of $4.99 per month – consider the same amount in Euro. Assumptions will be confirmed soon.
