Dwayne Johnson in the Aladdin sequel? According to recent rumours, the actor is in talks with Disney over a still undisclosed role.
Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin was released in May 2019 and was a massive hit at the international box office, grossing over $1 billion. Disney announced back in August 2019 that a sequel to the live adaptation of the animated classic would see the light of day.
When Mena Massoud, who portrays the hero, and Naomi Scott, who portrays Princess Jasmine, return, Will Smith’s presence as the genius is no longer assured.
Recent rumors have it that the actor could be replaced in the role of Genie in Disney’s Aladdin 2 after actor Chris Rock was slapped in the face during the Oscars ceremony on April 28.
According to website Huge freakin robotDwayne Johnson is reportedly in talks to join the Aladdin sequel. It’s unclear exactly what role this will be, but given the actor’s physique, a role of genius is more than likely. The comedian has previously worked with Disney on Moana and Jungle Cruise and has a good relationship with the studio.
As a reminder, at the end of the first feature film, the Genie is freed from Aladdin and becomes human. The latter’s narrative arc may well end that way, as the lamp is now the habitat of Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), whose dynasty wish was to become the most powerful genius on earth.
Dwayne Johnson could be a new genius who has come to help Aladdin and Jasmine fight Jafar. But that’s just speculation for now.
Aladdin 2 was meant to be an original story. The studio has announced that it will most likely not be an adaptation of Return of Jafar, the sequel to John Musker and Ron Clements’ direct-to-video film released in 1994. So everything is possible.
At the moment, Dwayne Johnson has a busy schedule as the actor is currently shooting post-shoots for the DC movie Black Adam, due out October 19th, the 2 sequels to the Netflix action movie Red Notice, as well as the sequel to the Fast & Furious spin-offs Hobbs & Shaw.
