Almost all mobile phone brands are designing or planning to develop a device that will be foldable in the near future. Oppo is one of them. After presenting the Oppo Find N, which opens like a book, the manufacturer could soon announce another model, which this time would be foldable and affordable.
The range of foldable smartphones is expanding somewhat, but while some have been waiting for the wave of models, the trend seems to be towards more disparate versions. It is true that designing and manufacturing a clamshell phone is much more complex than a classic model. However, several manufacturers are working on folding devices, including Oppo. The brand officially launched their Find N at the end of last year and we even got to try it out. At the moment this model is offered exclusively in China, but we hope to see it in our market one day. In the meantime, we learn that the brand would be working on another type of foldable smartphone, using the principle of the folding phone, the “form factor” of which is currently used by the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3, the Motorola Razr 5G or the Huawei P50 Pocket , for example Example.
Oppo’s flip smartphone would be cheaper than current models
Oppo would therefore be on the verge of offering a second smartphone and diversifying its approach to reach a wider audience. At least that’s what a well-informed person thinks and goes even further by saying that the clamshell model designed by Oppo would be more affordable than phones of the same type currently available. It even quotes a price of 5000 CNY, the equivalent of around 720 euros without taxes, which would make it cheaper than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip3 and significantly cheaper than the classic version of the Huawei P50 Pocket.
It’s pretty good for the market that Oppo seems willing to play on the price field, as this type of device is still far too expensive for most users to turn to more conventional models, maybe a foldable one day smartphones can afford. Despite everything, a fall in the price of foldable smartphones could also contribute to broader and faster democratization than before. Lately, however, Oppo hasn’t really been in that direction if we look at the prices of the highest-end smartphones launched by the brand with the Find X5 and Find X5 Pro not being particularly cheap. Tech-wise, Oppo’s foldable clamshell smartphone is expected to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ processor, meaning it may have to make some compromises if the phone is to remain affordable.
