Here are the 39 legislators in Ottawa who are against abortion

Abortion rights are far from unanimous in Ottawa, as many elected officials, all from the Conservative Party, remain opposed.

According to data from the Campaign Life Coalition, an anti-abortion lobby, as many as a third of Conservative MPs say they are still “pro-life” today.

So there are 39 of the 338 federally elected MPs, all conservatives, who oppose the concept of abortion.

Abortion has made a comeback on federal news as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to overturn a landmark 1973 decision that led to its legalization in the United States, according to Politico.

Most anti-abortion conservatives are from the West and Prairies, but some are from the Maritimes and several are from Southern Ontario, inclusive Leslyn Lewis, the only member of the anti-abortion clan still in the running for party leadership.

None are from Quebec. But MP Alain Rayes from Victoriaville says he respects the opinion of his colleagues.

At the end of a heated debate on the issue in the House yesterday, he hinted that the issue remained “extremely sensitive, even tactical” within the party.

Leslyn Lewis, for example, made it to third place in the previous lead race thanks to support from the anti-abortion lobby.

That was in August 2020, six months after a Conservative Saskatchewan congressman introduced a bill that other parties denounced as an attempt to criminalize “backdoor” abortion.

The bill aimed to amend the Penal Code to ban sex-based abortions. 82 elected officers voted in favor and 248 against.

Listen to the Dutrizac-Dumont Meeting with Benoît Dutrizac and Mario Dumont on QUB radio:

Although the procedure has been decriminalized in Canada since 1989, there is no federal law governing voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion). It is therefore a right protected by the Charter, but without clear regulation.

As promised in the campaign, the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said yesterday that his government would examine the legal framework surrounding abortionto eventually ‘secure’ and even ‘improve’ access, ‘not only now but under any other government in the future’.

Abortion is a “medically necessary service” under the Health Canada Act. However, on average, only one in six hospitals in the country practices it.
