Quebec Halloween Bombing: The “real Carl” and the “Carl of the mission” at the center of cross-examination

In the Halloween attacker’s mind, was there a real internal battle between “good Carl” and “bad Carl” when it came time to claim his victims? The DPCP prosecutor tried Thursday during a rigorous cross-examination to test the limits of this argument at the heart of the debate.

During his testimony, Halloween killer Carl Girouard often referred to the “Carl of the mission” who took over the “real Carl” to kill people in Old Quebec. “I can’t imagine the real Carl doing something like that,” he repeated. “It’s evil Carl who’s been killing people,” he added.

Since the defendant admits to having committed the homicides, criminal responsibility is at stake to know if he was able to distinguish right from wrong at the time of the crime or if his condition was altered by mental disorders.

An “Agent of Chaos”

The mission of the man who dubbed himself the “Agent of Chaos” was to alert his “alter ego” on a Halloween full moon night with a brave act in order to be imitated.

On cross-examination, DPCP prosecutor Mr.and François Godin therefore lingered long on this dichotomy of the two Carls to test the limits of the argument.

Jumping from one topic to another, Mand Godin almost always asked which of the two Carls had taken the action in question.

Often giving the impression of not knowing what to answer, the 26-year-old kept replying: “That’s a good question”.

In justification, he added: “It’s hard to say because I have to put myself in the shoes of the Carl of the mission. How can it be exactly what I’m thinking today? »

When asked about the origin of his mission, Girouard had no answer either. “How could I know exactly where it came from?” he said while agreeing that it wasn’t from a hallucination or the “devil” or any other voice he was hearing in his head.

Multiple times M.and Godin told the defendant he acted premeditated by being careful not to be caught before and during his mission.

By dressing up for Halloween to go unnoticed and causing the most casualties, by using a procedural mask in the middle of a pandemic, or checking news sites just before going into action.

“You checked the news to see what’s going on because it was your finest hour, your moment, you wanted to do the news,” the prosecutor added. An argument that the defendant refuted. “The mission wasn’t made for me. »

inner struggle

Although he thought about his mission every day for six years, it seems that “the real Carl did his best to fight until the last moment”. But it was a Carl Girouard on a mission who moments later attacked seven people.

However, the mission began to “take the edge off” after the assassination of Suzanne Clermont, as he did not find the satisfaction the attacks were intended to bring him, he said.

However, the defendant repeated that evil Carl disappeared only once while in detention, several days later, when he cried a lot.

An observation by Quebec Prison’s Director of Professional Services, Sandy Lapointe, who testified that Girouard made a significant change in behavior when he agreed to see the psychiatrist in the infirmary and take medication.

The trial continues this morning with defense expert, psychiatrist Gilles Chamberland.

Carl Girouard says he fought between his two personalities, good and bad, before embarking on his grueling journey. We see him here preparing to attack Rémy Bélanger, one of the victims who managed to escape. Stabbed, the saber with which he committed his crimes.

Excerpts from the cross-examination exchange

Mand Francois Godin

I’m right in saying that it’s easier if you dress up on a Halloween night
go unnoticed? »

The defendant Carl Girouard

It would be a logical assumption, I understand, but it has nothing to do with it. »

Mand Francois Godin

On October 31, 2018 at 6:46 p.m. they arrived in Quebec. Am I correct in saying that you came to Quebec on Halloween night to check out some locations? »

The defendant Carl Girouard

When I came on Halloween night in 2018 I thought it would be decorated, I thought it would be beautiful. Of course the Carl of the Mission was on my mind, of course I was thinking of those things, but I felt like the real Carl Girouard at that moment, so that evening I went to Château Frontenac for a drink. I felt good. »

Mand Francois Godin

when did he come back the good karl? »

The defendant Carl Girouard

He came back, when I arrived in custody I started to cry the first time. »
