The third day of hospitalization is a turning point

  • Currently, on average, more than 85,500 new cases of Covid-19 are registered in France every day.
  • On average, 134 people are admitted to critical care every day.

More than 1,400 people are hospitalized in France on average every day due to Covid-19, according to the latest figures available. Based on an unpublished study presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID), taking place from April 23-26 in Lisbon, Portugal, the third day spent in hospital would be the riskiest for symptomatic Covid-19 patients.

Analyze the different factors of the disease…

To reach this conclusion, the research team analyzed the data of 90 patients – 54% of them men – who had an average age of 60 years and suffered from Covid-19 in severe and non-severe forms.

In particular, they examined the blood samples taken from these hospital patients on the first, third, fifth and seventh days. They wanted to analyze the values of various indicators of the disease.

…to determine the most risky moment

Results: On the first day there was no difference between the indicators. On the other hand, from the third day, they had very different levels and in some people with a more severe form in much higher amounts.

On the other hand, the group of people most affected by Covid-19 took longer to recover normally and also had a higher mortality rate: 20% versus 0% in those who had a mild form. . Finally, those with the most severe forms were also more likely to develop secondary infections.

Increase the patient’s chances of survival

Many patients present to the emergency room requiring minimal oxygenation (…) but progress rapidly and require mechanical oxygenationsay the authors. Monitoring these immune indicators could help identify these patients earlier‘ and start providing support faster. And, ultimatelyincrease the chances of survival of patients with Covid-19 in a severe form, so that they do not develop a severe form.

The scientists now want to continue their research in order to better identify the predictive indicators for the progression of the disease to a severe form. Finally, a blood test could be used to identify patients who are most likely to become seriously ill.
