It’s a surprise that multiple pieces of information about Sony’s next-gen WH-1000XM5 headphones have been leaked online, revealing a new design and more advanced specs compared to the company’s current offering. This is a high-end model than ever, looking to compete with Apple’s AirPods Max.
The new WH-1000XM5 headphones in detail
When it comes to noise-cancelling wireless audio, Sony’s flagship WH-1000XM4 headphones are one of the best, and arguably the AirPods Max’s biggest rival alongside the Bose 700.
According to an unnamed retailer source who spoke to German site TechnikNews, the successor to Sony’s WH-1000XM4 will feature a new design that will include thinner articulated arms connecting the earcups with a narrower headband aptly reminiscent of the Bose 700. The redesigned headband is made of metal rather than plastic so as not to weaken the device.
On the other hand, Sony has increased the padding of the earcups and ditched the folding mechanism that allowed one earcup to fit inside the other.
According to our colleagues’ source, one of the major advances of WH-1000XM5 concerns the autonomy, since the headphones with active noise cancellation could last 40 hours, 10 hours more than the XM4. The total charging time is said to be 3.5 hours via USB-C, about 30 minutes longer than the current generation.
On the sound side, the Japanese manufacturer has repositioned the three microphones and also modified a “Custom” button. The XM5 headphones would have an additional ANC processor and a new sound driver, suggesting an improvement in noise cancellation and listening quality, although this has not yet been confirmed.
Overall, Sony will offer a real evolution of its flagship product, while the XM4 has only slightly improved on the excellent XM3.
What release date for the XM5?
The release date of the helmet XM5 is still unknown, but appeared in FCC documents a few months ago, indicating imminent commercialization. The XM5 will continue to be sold in black and beige.
The price is yet to be known as the XM4 will sell for €349, which is a lot cheaper than the AirPods Max which usually retail for €629 but sometimes €499 with a promotion. Apple could also launch an AirPods Max 2 by 2023, but that has yet to be confirmed.
