DENVER — Marcus Johansson scored the deciding goal midway through the third period, Ilya Samsonov stopped 24 shots and the Washington Capitals ended the Colorado Avalanche’s nine-game winning streak with a 3-2 win on Monday.
Alex Ovechkin – with his 48th goal of the season – and Garnet Hathaway also scored for the Capitals. Thanks to yesterday’s results, the Capitals earned their place in the playoffs for the eighth straight year.
Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen scored for the Avalanche, who lead the NHL with 116 points. Prior to the matchup against the Capitals, Lehkonen had never been defeated in an Avalanche jersey. He was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens at close of trade.
Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves in the loss.
And six for the Canucks
Elias Pettersson scored two goals and had one assist as the Vancouver Canucks extended their winning streak to six with a 6-2 win over the Dallas Stars.
Brock Boeser and Jason Dickinson each had a goal and two assists for the Canucks (38-28-10). Vasily Podkolzin and Conor Garland also flashed red lights for the BC squad.
Only Roope Hintz scored for the Stars (43-28-5), including one shorthanded.
Thatcher Demko has stopped 28 of 30 shots for the Canucks, who have won all three meetings between the two clubs this season.
Jake Oettinger allowed four goals on 19 shots before coming on at half-time. Scott Wedgewood made 10 saves in relief.
The Knights lose a crucial game
Devil 3 – Golden Knights 2
Nathan Bastian scored a goal and an assist as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2.
The Golden Knights missed an opportunity to get close to the Los Angeles Kings and third place in the Pacific Division. With five games to go, the Nevada team is three points behind the Kings, who have played the same number of games.
Andreas Johnsson and Jesper Boqvist also scored for the Devils, who have only 13 wins in their last 40 games.
Andrew Hammond stopped 42 shots for his first win with the Devils. He’s played on three NHL teams this season but has only had his eighth goal.
Keegan Kolesar and Chandler Stephenson scored for the Golden Knights when Robin Lehner made 25 saves.
The Canes want to win again
Sebastian Aho scored his 36th goal of the season midway through the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes ended a two-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Monday.
Nino Niederreiter, Max Domi, Vincent Trocheck and Jesper Fast also hit the mark for the Hurricanes, who cemented their first place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Carolina team has 106 points, two more than the division’s second-place team, the New York Rangers, while having the first tiebreak. However, Rangers have a game on their hands.
These two clubs meet in New York on Tuesday 26 April.
Nick Ritchie, Loui Eriksson and Alex Galchenyuk all hit the mark for the Coyotes.
Antti Raanta stopped 23 shots for the Hurricanes while Karel Vejmelka made 46 saves for the Coyotes.
